Providing secure day programmes for people with mild to moderate dementia

Lavender Cottage is a secure day centre for people with mild to moderate dementia. Situated within the grounds of Selwyn Village, the warm and welcoming cottage environment provides a safe, comfortable setting for client activities, with an enclosed garden and outdoor seating also available for clients to enjoy.

Clients’ participation and engagement in life are promoted through an array of meaningful social, cognitive and physical activities tailored for older adults living with dementia. These include reminiscing sessions, music and art therapy, gentle exercise, minibus outings and gardening. Clients are also involved in daily living skills and familiar tasks associated with the running of the cottage, such as food preparation, washing dishes and general household chores, making it a ‘home from home’ for those who attend. Meals include morning and afternoon tea and a cooked lunch. The programme is flexible and takes clients’ abilities into consideration, as well as their preferred level of participation, adapting to reflect the individual needs of those attending on that particular day.

Lavender Cottage is a multicultural day centre and clients are of various ethnic, religious and social backgrounds.

Located at 23 Wainoni Street, Point Chevalier, access is from within the grounds of Selwyn Village. A minibus pick-up service is available by arrangement. The centre operates Monday – Friday, 9.00am – 3.00pm. It is closed on public holidays.
