The Selwyn Way

Guiding us in all our work is The Selwyn Way, our unique approach to the care and wellbeing of all who connect with us. The Selwyn Way puts the individual at the centre of everything we do – staff members and residents alike. It informs and guides us in how we treat others, showing respect, courtesy, care and consideration at all times, and is underpinned by the Faith and Tikanga principles inherent in our Constitution.

We believe that a person’s wellbeing is defined by the following five domains:

Spirituality (Taha Wairua)

A dimension that brings meaning to life.

Growth (Te Haere Whakamua)

Continuing to learn and flourish as a person.

Contentment (Te Taanga Manawa)

A state of satisfaction with life.

Belonging (Whanaungatanga)

A sense of meaningful connection with others, being part of a community.

Resilience (Te Oranga)

Capacity to overcome adversity, stress or uncomfortable change in ourselves or our circumstances.

Wellbeing is impacted by your environment, your physical and mental health status and the opportunities you have to engage in life.

Memorable Values that are meaningful to all

We also have a set of four inspirational Values which reflect the kinds of behaviours we want to have at Selwyn and the way we want to work together. These were developed with the input of the Selwyn Board, senior leaders and a focus group of staff and are upbeat, contemporary and fun.

Be Amazing! - Lift others up - Notice others - Be bold and innovative!

At Selwyn, we pride ourselves on these Values which are about working together to create a community where everyone feels safe, valued and respected, no matter who they are. Through our Selwyn Values postcard initiative (the postcards are available in all staff areas), our staff can use them at any time throughout the year to recognise team members who live our Values and go ‘the extra mile’ in the service they provide to residents or how they support their co-workers.

Recognising excellence

Our Selwyn Values Awards recognition initiative honours staff members in diverse roles across the village who go ‘above and beyond’ in their roles, enhancing our workplace culture and making a profound difference in the lives of our residents and all those we serve.

While we formally recognise a few individuals through the Awards, each one of our staff members is very much valued, appreciated and respected for their skills, teamwork and commitment.

Something about John

Having permanent shifts and fixed rosters is helpful when it comes to family life and planning what to do on your days off.

Something about John

Selwyn’s participatory approach to care is very different from where I’ve worked before. At Selwyn, we ask our residents what they’d like to do; people are treated as individuals and are consulted on their care plans and daily activities. So they’re more comfortable and feel much more at home, as a result.
